Historical Information

Aerial photography dates back to the 19th century and refers to photographs taken from an elevated position, usually in an aircraft. One of the most common uses is for taking photographs to use for geographical surveys.

Scope and Content

Aerial black and white photographs of various cities and towns in the United States as well as some from abroad. Many of the photographs came from the private collection of Harold T. Rib, a professor and former chief of aerial surveys for the Bureau of Public Roads and the Federal Highway Administration.
