Historical InformationThe Interstate Highway System is a network of highways that forms a portion of the National Highway System in the United States. The project that brought the system into being was championed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who authorized the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, though planning for the system had begun in the 1930s. As a result, the system is officially known as the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways.
