Boissieu was quite famous during his lifetime, enjoying success in and beyond his native France. Boissieu shirked the artistic trends of his time, instead favoring the art style of the Dutch masters of the 17th century, particularly Rembrandt van Rijn. He favored this style so much that Boisseau became known as the "French Rembrandt." Boissieu's main subject for his art was country living, concentrating on both landscapes, country scenes, and individuals.
